If you live in a cold Northern climate area where ice is an issue, a gutter protection system can be a must have. The problem is that for most metal gutters, ice dams can quickly and easily form and create a lot of long term damage to your homes roof and eaves. This is why a system such as the gutter brush, or other types of gutter cleaning tools, is highly recommended.
An ice dam is formed when the snow melts on your roof and reaches your rain gutter. Because there is no heat under the eaves, the metal gutters remain freezing cold. The result is that the water then freezes inside the gutter channel and builds up layer after layer until it actually “dams” up the water behind it. The warmer water is trapped and gets under the roof and creates havoc with wood, shingles and eventually can cause a roof leak in your ceiling.
Left untouched year after year you can eventually expect to have to replace a big part of your home’s roof, which is serious investment on your part. The key is to not let it get to that point. Install a good gutter protection system and you’ll never have to worry about this issue.
