When we hear about Italian cuisine, two things come to mind: pizza and lasagna. While pizza is available in all kinds of assortments, not the same can be said about lasagna, which in most cases, is made of the lasagna noodles, cheese, tomato sauce and meat. Basically, the recipe is always the same – therefore, it doesn’t have the novelty factor and you might grow tired of it soon. Right? Right?
Well, I beg for permission to say: “Objection, your honor!” Let’s think green for a second. Let’s put ourselves in a vegetarian’s shoes. He has a pretty rough life, being constantly mocked by the carnivore man who can’t imagine a day without meat and who feels the urge to shove that beef steak in the vegetarian’s face so that he joins the meat side again. It’s hard to convince a carnivore that eating green does not equal eating healthy food which tastes horrible, but thanks to the vegetarian lasagna, Team Veggie wins some valuable points.
The reason why many refuse to eat healthier is that they assume that nothing could possibly replace the great taste of chicken, for example. “It’s green. I don’t like how it looks, therefore it must taste awful!” However, the vegetarian lasagna, believe it or not, tastes as good as a normal lasagna containing beef. Even in the aspect department, you can’t really tell the difference. To make the dish healthier, you can choose a low-fat cottage cheese and ingredients such as spinach, mushrooms and basil. Even the lasagna noodles – or pasta, can be whole wheat ones; after all, the healthier, the better. It’s a simple lasagna recipe, yet it works its magic.
The vegetarian lasagna takes about an hour and a half to be done, but it’s well worth the wait, since the end result is mouth-watering. People often say that the less complicated the better. A simple lasagna recipe requires only three types of cheese: Parmesan, ricotta and Mozzarella, plus some tomato sauce, oregano, basil, maybe some mushrooms and of course, the noodles; however, simple does not mean banal in this case. I take a simple lasagna recipe any time over something like escargot, for example, considered a delicacy by many. It’s even hard for me to see someone eating it, much less eating it myself. I fail to see its charm.
The great thing about lasagna is that even if you aren’t an experimented cook, you can very well pass as one if you successfully prepare such a dish, because it has a worldwide appeal. You can’t go wrong with lasagna. You just can’t.
The meatless lasagna is probably one of the strongest weapons of the vegetarians: it looks good, it smells good, and it tastes good – all this without a single ounce of meat. Despite the overall culinary preferences, unless we are dealing with the kind of person who is always in denial, refusing to acknowledge that the other one is right, denying the fact that it tastes delicious would be, simply put, a lie. Good taste is considered to be relative, but lasagna is the exception.
