“Breathe” by Pink Floyd

The entire Dark Side of the Moon album is amazing (and I can’t wait to get my hands on the Dark Side of the Moon Immersion Box Set) but sometimes I think my very favorite song on the album is “Breathe.”

It has such an awesome dreamy atmosphere to it while also driving forward with a memorable melody and some fantastic lyrics. As the first proper song (“Speak to Me” doesn’t count) it really sets the mood for the whole rest of the album which is of course amazing.

“Breathe” really isn’t a very long song. It’s less than 3 minutes long and that’s even with an intro that lasts over a minute long! But even so, it sounds like a complete “statement” to me while also being an opening to so much more.

“Breathe, breath in the air. Don’t be afraid to care.” These lyrics may be simple but they work perfectly with the music that surrounds them.

That Little One Would Be Much Happier in Beginner Drum Lessons

When I sit in the local coffee shop watching the people around me it amazes me really to watch of them. A young group of people walk in with one little toddler with them. The little one was no older than 3 or 4 years old. Why they would think he would sit still in a boring coffee shop is beyond me. To date, Lykke Li has come out with two full length albums. Her 2008 debut, Youth Novels, was heralded by the talking heads in the music industry and her unique sound brought her many new fans.

2011 may well be the year of Li though. Wounded Rhymes, released in March, really put her on the map. An 8.3 from Pitchfork and some high marks from other sites is no laughing matter.

A History of My Guitar Music

When I was 23, I was sort of bumming around southern California in a huff over existence. I was mostly sleeping in my truck, nomadically keeping around the suburban offshoots of L.A.. I might hike in the morning and play my guitar in the hills, then make my way towards town. At night I would make a parade of the local bars or anything else open at that hour.

I would bring my guitar and try to master some of the songs I’d been practicing that afternoon. Well the crowd would have its booze hounds that might hoot or holler if I was real lucky but mostly I would get no reaction at all. That was the worst thing to experience, when the people had no response, as if I was playing an air guitar. Realizing that I must be boring to them, I became depressed. Something just wasn’t clicking in my head, I could feel it but never knew what to do or say.

I started walking around with something to prove but had no strength behind my gestures. I started to drink too much at night and some of the bar patrons noticed. I ended up making a fool of myself one particular night and I got booed off stage. The manager took me out back to give me his impression of my playing. I thought he might snap my guitar on the ground but he grabbed the strap and made me sit down. He told me the way I sung I sounded crazy because the words did not seem to say how I felt.

He laughed at me but then he said something profound. He said that I acted depressed and angry, but the songs were about happy times. He showed me how to play without a pick, using the tips of his finger nails. He said to play the guitar without any song or words. I took what he said to heart and realized that the guitar and I could work out the music first, and I could add the words later, to fit the music.

After a while, I became appreciated for my talent of writing more a more sad bluesy style of songs. People started identifying with my music and I became happier writing my sad, depressing songs. Ironically, I was then able to bring some of my original style back into my sessions and they also received great reviews. This experience taught me how to be a more creative song writer and not to force myself into something I am not.

Prices Aren’t Cheap for Electronica Music Festival

My friend and I have been looking at getting hold of some tickets for an electronica music festival that is taking place in the English city of Derby next winter but the prices are so very expensive. We live in Belgium and would be making the trip on a very small budget, taking the car and ferry all of the way there. However, at the moment we just don’t think that we can afford these prices which is a shame because some of our favourite artists are going to be there and it is a rare opportunity to see them live and to also get to meet them.
